HOMEDIARYWHO THEY WERETHE CLOGGERS

Suppin' Wit' Devil

Clive: 10:00 and we were all gathered at the Tickled Trout - not just those who had said they'd be there, but also the pleasant surprises of Debbie (Mrs Chimes) and Eddy (Gypsy).  Particular mention has to be made of Pete & Jennie who'd already put in 125 miles of very fast motorway work from the Midlands - and Jennie was frozen poor gal, and thawing out with a large hot coffee.  So we had John & Sandra (the Quineys), Simon & Debbie (the Chimes), Gareth & Sue (the Precious Metals, or is it Heavy Metals?), Clive & Kit (the Clives!), Eddy (Gypsy) and Pete & Jennie (the TrophyChaps).

The weather gods were extremely kind to us and the sun beat down on us as much as a March sun can.

Clive: There in this shot is Garf's new 'silver machine' eagerly awaiting it's running-in.

After half an hours chin-wagging and catching-up this, the Cloggers first 2005 season ride was ready to roll.

The run up through the Trough and Forest of Bowland was leisurely and moderately paced given the state of the roads and the temperature but the rewards of the views was sufficient compensation.  In the strong sunlight the view across the Hodder Valley, with the stark trees and spread of wintry fields with the snow-capped hills framing it all in the distance fair took the breath away.

Clive: A stop off was made at Dunsop Bridge for a warm and a brew, and for Eddy to consume a whole packet of Eccles Cakes!  The climb up and over the tops towards High Bentham allowed some more spirited riding until we were met by three sheep out-runners who escorted us for a mile or so at the gallop!

The A683 gave us a chance to open the bikes up properly until at about 12:45 we dropped onto the A65 for the short run down to Devil's Bridge where we tucked the bikes into the throng.

Here's Debbie, Simon (ignore his affliction!), Sue and Kit.

Clive: We had the great pleasure of meeting up with Paul (Zoffo) who'd ridden down from Workington, and BarSteward & Jack who'd come in from Skipton.  Really nice to meet you guys and we hope to see you again soon.

Unfortunately, the queue for food & drinks was massive so we decided to carry on to the Carnforth Truck Stop and have lunch there instead.  Paul, BarSteward and Jack were going to make their way back home directly from Devil's Bridge so after a short meeting we said farewell to them before covering the few miles to and down the M6.

Here's Eddy (Gypsy), the back of Fodder (who always turns up 'out of the blue! - nice to see you again Paul) and who's obscuring Jack, then there's BarSteward and just in shot John (Quiney).

Clive: Here the back of Fodder obscures Quiney as he chats with Zoffo.  Behind them is Sandra and Jennie in deep discussion with Pete playing the recorder ..... or something!

Fodder made his own way back to nearby Lancaster after we'd left.

Clive: A typical view of Devil's Bridge, although the number of bikes was obviously quite small due to the cold.

Clive: The line-up after arriving at Carnforth Truck Stop - Chimes,Gypsy, TrophyChap, Quiney, Clive and Precious Metal.

After a great meal we parted company with Chimes, Gypsy and TrophyChap making their way back directly on the M6 and Quiney, Precious Metal and Clive taking the more 'interesting' route across Pillings after cutting through Lancaster.  Clive & Kit had a short stop at Gareth & Sue's for coffee and then blatted off back to Manchester.

Photo - Chimes:  A grand day was had by all, as they say, and a truly enjoyable opening event for this Cloggers' season now started.
